Obnoxious, fresh Windows 7 install, left “checking for updates” for over 24 hours…here is how to fix.

  1. Stop Windows Update service
  2. Download the December 2015 client from KB3112343
    * note – there were newer versions of the client but they didn’t work for me *
  3. Install, reboot, get updates
